SOUNDING DATA WORKSHOP - [pm 2.5 data monitoring with sonification], 2025, Idlewild Park Evironmental Science Learning Center, Queens, New York.
Sounding Data Justice for Environmental Liberation in Southeast Queens is a data art project conducted from August 2024 to December 2025 in eastern New York City.
Artists András Blazsek and Emily Verla Bovino worked with community organizer Barbara Brown and environmental scientist Dawn Roberts Semple to develop workshops and listening activities centered on data sonification.
The project partnered with Eastern Queens Alliance (EQA), a network of civic groups led by Brown, which collects and analyzes local air quality and aircraft noise data to track pollution from nearby JFK Airport flight paths.
In three workshops, residents learned to turn this data into sound, building data literacy while reflecting on their experiences of environmental inequality. They learned basic coding, created simple sensing instruments, and used a visual programming language.
Insights from workshop discussions informed a series of listening activities addressing community concerns. The project culminated in three sound installations and a collective action.
